Whether you are building a brand new patio or adding onto your patio landscape, there are several key facets to creating a brilliant design. It is crucial that you take the time to plan out what you want to do prior to jumping on your patio landscape design. Everything from how much space you have left to what kinds of materials you want to use should be taken into consideration.

The first thing you will want to consider in regards to the patio design is the material you are going to use. If you are adding on to an existing patio, you probably will want to stick with the same material. Some of the more popular materials used to landscape a patio include brick, stone or concrete. All of these make a great base and from there you can expand to include many other materials. You can consider rocks, stone, brick, tile, timber, and marble.

When selecting your materials, it is important that you consider both design and functionality. You do not want to purchase material that is weak just because it looks good. The best material is attractive, comfortable and durable all at the same time.

As soon as you have your base material picked out it is time to add the accessories. Accessories can include anything from plants to colorful stones to a small water fixture of some sort. Once you have your above ground pool installed then the next task in line is to have some decking installed around it. You have the option of having the pool completely wrapped in decking or just having it partially wrapped, so there is room for a few chairs and for people to lay in the sun.

For many people the first thing that comes to mind when they think of decking is redwood. The fact is that redwood doesn't work well in alot of climates and is quite expensive. Secondly, if you have seen pictures in magazines of beautiful redwood decks you have to bear in mind that they were made from super pricey, premium, top grade redwood that is completely free of knot holes and color flaws.

For many people, one great option is to use premium grade Douglas Fir for their decking around their built in pool. Even less then premium grade will do if you want but the one huge benefit of this is substantial cost savings. It is more susceptible to decay then redwood but if it is treated and painted correctly it will easily last for a couple of decades.

Douglas Fir is the type of pine that is used for the framing of a building and it usually ends up covered up by siding and sheetrock on a house and isn't usually recommended for decking due to its vulnerability to warpage and decay.

However; if it is painted well with a high quality oil based primer that has a good dose of penetrating additive added to it and then given a good top coat of high grade exterior paint it will give years of service and because it is painted you can choose the color that matches your pool best.




Porch and patio serve different purposes. A porch welcomes the guest and gives visitors the first impression of your home. A patio serves as a place to rest and relax, and makes a venue for dining, entertainment, and other outdoor activities. Begin your design by identifying the purposes of the areas.

Unlike designing the interior of the house which is limited to the 4 walls of the room, designing the porch and patio is more complicated as you have the outdoors environment to consider. But taking these 6 important design elements into account, constructing your design is made easier.

1. Theme. A particular theme sets the final look for them. Before moving on to the construction plan, make sure that you have a identified and drawn specific theme to your design.

2. Cover and Canopies. There are lots of options for their covers and canopies - aluminum patio covers, arbors, awnings, corrugated metal roof, gazebos, offset umbrellas, pergolas, sail shades, traditional roof, trees, trellis, and umbrellas. Your choice should basically be between the protection from the sun and rain. Covers may be a permanent construction or movable covers.

3. Flooring. Depending on the theme or design you have, their flooring options widely vary. Prices also range from cheap to outrageously expensive. Some may last for a couple of years while others can last for a very long time. Popular choice for porch floorings are wood, tile, concrete, and brick while patio flooring options are stone, stone veneer, plain concrete, concrete pavers, brick, tile, stamped and colored concrete, and flagstone. When choosing what flooring to use, consider your budget, durability, and the overall appeal of the material.

4. Furniture. Picking the right furniture for them should be based on comfort, purpose, and theme of the design. Basic types of porch furniture are tables (laminate top or glass top) and chairs. For patio furniture, you have swing, rocker, garden bench, and chaise lounge. Choose furniture made from wicker, aluminum, iron, wrought iron, rattan, and wood (teak and cedar). One tip: Start with the basics and add new pieces over time.

5. Color. Multi-color palettes add life to the design. If you want to achieve a slight transition from the interior to the patio and porch, use the color you have on the walls of your interior.

6. Special features. Finally, depending on your taste, add a special feature to your design. Some of your options are fountains, waterfalls, hot tubs, fireplace, and mini pool.
